Foreign Driving Licences

From an EU or EEA state: for an unlimited period

EEA or European Union driving licences are recognized in Austria, and may be converted at any time on a voluntary basis.
Responsible Authority: the district administrative authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft)
Required Documents (most driving licence authorities require the original documents):
  • Passport (Reisepass) or personal identification card
  • Foreign driving licence
  • Photo of the owner (35 x 45 mm – passport photo)
  • Possibly extract from the driving licence file of the issuing country

From a non-EU or non EEA state

– In case of establishing a residence in Austria: six months starting from establishment of the residence (Wohnsitz), if the owner has reached the age of 18
– Without residence in Austria: up to twelve months starting from the entry in the county, if the owner has reached the age of 18
If the driving licence is not written in German, it is only valid in combination with an international driving licence or a translation! Responsible Authority: the district administrative authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft)

  • Medical report
Please note:
Only valid foreign driving licences can be assigned. An examination (driving test) at a driving school is required, except for driver’s licences issued in:
all categories: Andorra, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Insel Man, Japan, Jersey, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Schweiz, Serbien, Vereinigtes Königreich Großbritannien und Nordirland
class B: Australien, Bosnien-Herzegowina, Hongkong, Israel, Kanada, Neuseeland, Nordmazedonien, Republik Südafrika, Republik Südkorea, USA, Vereinigte Arabische Emirate
